Flora

The Palau islands support a wide range of habitat for you to explore, the beautiful atoll forests or the interesting mangrove swamps. These remote islands have an astounding 724 know species of native vesicular plant, amazingly 194 of which are endemic to the islands, however a few of these species are endangered  and require protection to ensure their survival

For example, Ponapea palauensis is palm tree native to the islands and is listed as critically endangered on the UCIN red list. Research show this could because of two parrot species that were introduced to the islands, these parrots eat the berry produced by the tree and caused it population to go into decline.

Another example includes, Parkia parvifoliola is a flowering plant in the pea/bean family that is native to the islands, and listed as endangered on the UCIN red list. This species was once wide spread across the islands however many were cut down because of the quality of their woody stems. Because of this laws have been put in place to protect the remaining population, however dispute the lack of harvesting the species has not recovered. The reason for this in unclear but one reason could be wildfires that have scared the local area and degraded the local habitat.
